A STEP BEYOND OBVIOUS !
How might we utilize design thinking and systems thinking methodologies to encourage empathetic connection between the civil engineers of Savannah with the decision makers of public and private sectors and the local community ?
OPPORTUNITY
To develop a framework for co-creation through a bottom-up approach for empowering civil engineers towards sustainable urban development.
OBJECTIVE
Peter Senge in his book,” The Fifth Discipline” mentioned about the core disciplines required for a strong organization. On studying those disciplines, the four building blocks of the tool kit were formed: 1. Personal Mastery 2. Mental Model 3. Shared Vision 4. City Resilience
This tool-kit was developed as a pilot project for the civil engineers of Savannah. It was co-created by interviewing the civil engineer from City of Savannah and privet engineer from Thomas and Hutton, decision-makers from the City of Savannah and EPA, Atlanta.
INTERVIEWS
“I didn’t even know there was state policy about the public-private partnership. I just assumed the government had the right to do it anyway.”
“The city is becoming denser. Looking at it more holistically is really to make the community more sustainable.”
“Sometimes decisions are made by non-engineers who are in charge and they don’t ask for our input. And so, that’s just part of it. But I definitely have a say, in our team and so I think that that’s the challenge, you know, hoping that you can give your input and that it be used.”
