How might we utilize design thinking and systems thinking methodologies to encourage empathetic connection between the civil engineers of Savannah with the decision makers of public and private sectors and the local community ?

OPPORTUNITY

To develop a framework for co-creation through a bottom-up approach for empowering civil engineers towards sustainable urban development.

OBJECTIVE

Peter Senge in his book,” The Fifth Discipline” mentioned about the core disciplines required for a strong organization. On studying those disciplines, the four building blocks of the tool kit were formed: 1. Personal Mastery  2. Mental Model 3. Shared Vision 4. City Resilience

This tool-kit was developed as a pilot project for the civil engineers of Savannah. It was co-created by interviewing the civil engineer from City of Savannah and privet engineer from Thomas and Hutton, decision-makers from the City of Savannah and EPA, Atlanta.

Nicholas Deffley

Director of Sustainability at City of Savannah

“I didn’t even know there was state policy about the public-private partnership. I just assumed the government had the right to do it anyway.”

Michael Roach

Project Manager at Thomas & Hutton Engineering Co.

“The city is becoming denser. Looking at it more holistically is really to make the community more sustainable.”

Cristy Lawrence

Director, Office of Capital Projects Management at City of Savannah

“Sometimes decisions are made by non-engineers who are in charge and they don’t ask for our input. And so, that’s just part of it. But I definitely have a say, in our team and so I think that that’s the challenge, you know, hoping that you can give your input and that it be used.”

INSIGHTS FROM THE RESEARCH

SYSTEMS MAP

INITIAL MAP

The first systems map was developed with the focus on encouraging public-private partnership projects, keeping the civil engineers of Savannah at the center.

OBSTRUCTIONS

FINAL MAP

The focus therefore became to enable local NGOs as the initiators to enable the civil engineers and decision makers of public and private companies of Savannah using this tool kit to empathetically connect to the community by means of public-private partnership projects.

Identity Cards

The identity cards are divided into four quadrants namely Collaborate, compare, control and create based on the competing value framework byJeff Degraff. Each quadrant represents a color. Every quadrant has cards related to personality types and value creation. These cards were formed by the research and co-creation with the civil engineers and community members.

Vision Chart

The purpose behind designing a vision chart is to have a visual representation of the difference between the personal achievement considerations and collaborative achievement. It is an interactive chart where the participants pin up their quadrant based achievement and a shared achievement. Based on these, they form their near-term, Long-term and Future-term goals.

Achievement Maps

Factors of achievement are based on the value created by every quadrant. Based on those factors and values, a chart of 8 factors is designed for the individual as well as group markings. It is also known as spider charts according to its appearance after the factors are graded in the scale if 1 to 5 from leas importance to highest importance.

how might we ??

Four different categories were selected from the compilations of six categories mentioned in the book METATHEMES by DESIGN IMPACT. Each category consists of compelling questions, which enables the participants to identify and implement specific problems to be solved through their system designs.

WORKSHOP

The workshop , “ A step beyond usual was facilitated among four individuals representing different sections of Savannah namely , civil engineer from city of Savannah, sustainable design professor at SCAD , Community organizer and a design thinking professional. The workshop was organized for a duration of two hours.
